This morning during my morning commute, I came up to the stoplight which was red, and noticed I was the only car in the right lane.

There were over a dozen in the left lane. Did a single one feel like it was better to just move over into the right lane, seeing as - theoretically - they could move up anywhere between 1 and more than 10 spots? Nope, not a one.

I think that this is a typical day in pretty much all of the US apart from certain corners of the NE.

Yeah, that seems to be a thing now. I see it a lot around here (front range CO), and saw it all over the US when I was traveling a ton for work. The funniest is on way-east I-70 when I'm going to/from the racetrack (High Plains Raceway). There is absolutely nothing out there. Almost exclusively it's long-haul trucking and multi-state roadtrippers/re-locaters. So, traffic is really light. Yet, so many of them are in the left lane, no car for miles ahead of or behind them. Really weird. The highway's in good shape there, too, so it's not a case of "I'm in the left lane because the right lane is super beat up".

are you off main or deer valley drive? if not its not likely I would happen upon your 9-5 spot sadly. Most of my time up there is trail commute or work commute.
